"Black people like to talk. If you go up and down the AM dial, the number of black voices calling in is incredible," said Kervin L. Clenance, the station's new vice president and general manager. WTPS is owned by Radio One, which specializes in programming for urban audiences.
The Al Sharpton Show (1 to 4 PM) and The Michael Eric Dyson Show (10 AM to 1 PM) are among the new features on WTPS 1080.
Radio One announced its new talk radio network targeting black listeners in January. The network launched on seven radio stations, including Miami's WTPS.

WTPS will keep its popular weekend Caribbean programming. For example, Eddy Edwards' program Caribbean Riddims will be on Saturdays from 3 'til 6 PM. It includes an ocean segment by Ken English.
Unfortunately, the legacy call letters WVCG, The Voice of Coral Gables, may be gone from this market forever.
Did you know that WTPS is British slang for What The Papers Say?

(Coral Gables, FL -- April, 2003) ...WVCG (1080) is an AM BCB radio
station in Coral Gables, Florida.
Hence the call letters, WVCG, which stand for the Voice of
Coral Gables.
Coral Gables, a suburb of Miami, is the home of the University of Miami, the UM Hurricanes, and the famed Biltmore Hotel and historic Venetian Pool. (Part of the American Idol movie, From Justin to Kelly, was filmed at the Venetian Pool.)

Most of WVCG's programming is brokered -- ethnic, non-English language, and especially Spanish, Creole, and other Caribbean programming. There's also Danny Tadmore's The Voice of Israel.
Until 1967, WVCG was a classical music station. The format has changed several times since then.

In the early 1980s, WVCG was an oldies station. See Famed Oldies DJ Jerry 'The Geater' Blavat Visits Miami, part of the South Florida Radio History site.
There once was even a WVCG-FM (105.1). It has changed several times, too -- first to WYOR and eventually to the urban music format heard on WHQT, Hot 105, today.
