Why Is School Board Station WLRN
Illegally Promoting Obama?

(Miami, FL -- June 8, 2008) ... It's not often that I criticize the Miami-Dade County Public Schools' FM station, National Public Radio affiliate WLRN-FM 91.3. Except for their unfortunate decision in the late 1990s to drop so much excellent local content (replacing it with those awful NPR programs), I think it's a pretty good station with informative and entertaining local programming.

I especially appreciate how they serve the community with WLRN-FM's jazz and Caribbean music programs, plus Ed Bell's South Florida Arts Beat at 1 PM on Fridays and Joseph Cooper's Topical Currents at 1 PM on Monday through Thursday.

Therefore, I am very disappointed to report hearing on WLRN-FM what can only be described as illegal content for any non-profit station. It's especially inappropriate for a station owned by a government entity, such as the Mami-Dade County Public Schools.

At about 2:15 AM early this morning, I was listening to Sounds of the Caribbean on WLRN-FM and a very long reggae campaign song came on about Democratic prsidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama.

This was not a funny song or parody, or even an excerpt from a political song used as part of an NPR or BBC news report. It was an overt campaign song about Obama, peppered with phrases like "changes we need" and repeating his name over and over from beginning to end. It had so much repetition it was annoying like that TV commercial for the headache remedy you put on your forehead!

Whether this Obama song was an "official" campaign song or one recorded by a far-away musician in Trinidad does not matter. It is totally inappropriate for a publicly-owned station.

I can't help wondering how some people would be impressed by this sneaky misuse of the public airwaves (in the non-profit segment of the FM band) to promote a political candidate. I'm thinking of people like members of the school board and the FCC, Hillary Rodham Clinton's and John McCain's campaigns, The Republican Party of Miami-Dade County, and of course the administrators at WLRN-FM.

For those who see nothing wrong with this, I would ask: How would you feel if the Armed Forces Radio Service was broadcasting John McCain campaign songs to our troops in Iraq? That would also be wrong.

If WLRN management stands behind this seeming endorsement of Obama, they should be held accountable. But if they are unaware of it, I think they would want to know so they can deal with it quickly.

Since WLRN-FM is intended to serve not only the people of Dade, but also Broward and parts of Monroe and Palm Beach Counties, our opinions count, too. Please tell these people what you think.

One might also consider this question: Should government even BE in the broadcasting business?

(July 7, 2008) ... Because I remembered the "not Hillary Clinton.... not John McCain... not John Wayne... not di Terminator" part of the song, I was able to quickly Google (using Obama and Terminator) a newspaper article about the Barack Obama Song, by Cocoa Tea.
(Click Barack Obama to listen to an excerpt or download the MP3.)

Cocoa Tea's Barack Obama Song and the story behind it are described Cocoa Tea sings for an Obama victory in The Jamaica Online Star. What I read definitely confirmed that it was intended to be a Barack Obama campaign song and therefore inappropriate for WLRN.

Reporter Krista Henry wrote that "Veteran reggae singer Cocoa Tea believes that his new song Barack Obama may impact positively on the Democrat candidate's chance of winning the United States 2008 presidential election."

Cocoa Tea told the reporter that "A radio disc jockey in New York called me and told me Obama's people called saying they need the song."

Shortly after the above was posted, I heard from a member of WLRN management, who asked me to supply more details. (I did.) He confirmed that the song was inappropriate, saying "Of course, you're absolutely correct in stating that the endorsement of any political agenda or campaign is forbidden for a public broadcaster."
