(June, 2004) ... Thirty-three years ago this month, I was a guest DJ on Don Wright's show on top-40 station WFUN (790) in South Miami.

WFUN was the competition for WQAM Tiger Radio. It was the predecessor to WMRZ (music), WNWS (news), and today's brokered WAXY.

The following article was published in the Hollywood Herald and North Dade Herald-Crier on June 24, 1971. It's been slightly edited for typos, etc.

Guest Deejay On WFUN

(South Miami, FL -- June 24, 1971) ... "THROUGH THIS DOOR PASS THE WORLD'S GREATEST DISC-JOCKIES" said the typewritten sign on the door of the control room. By the end of the evening I knew that they were right -- Don Wright! Of course that sign doesn't include me -- at least I don't think it does!

The best place to start the story is at the beginning ... which was a few weeks ago. One morning I heard their "Looking For Friends" promotion, mentioned last week.

The next day, I asked my friend Gary (a WFUN fan) to tell me in case he hears anything else I might be interested in on WFUN. Immediately he told me to write 50 words or less on why I wanted my own half-hour radio show and send it to Don Wright, c/o WFUN. I wrote it immediately and dropped it in the mail.

Then one night, about a week later, I got a phone call from Don Wright. Could I be on his show at 8 PM next Friday? (I'm glad I was sitting down at the time!) When I arrived at 7:25 I wasn't nervous, but I had no idea of what I was going to do! Just play records or just talk with Don or what?

I talked with Don for a while during records, and then he surprised me by asking me something [I don't remember what] on the air at 7:45.

"WFUN Future Hit:
Cymarron by The Rings"

The program, which he called The David Citron Show (another surprise), started with a trumpet fanfare at 8 PM.

I made one notable goof early in the program. I said "WFUN Future Hit: Cymarron by The Rings" when it should have been Rings by Cymarron. But I'm sure no one noticed, considering all the crazy names they use for groups these days.

Don said I could ad lib as much as I wanted, and I sure got my money's worth in that department. One gem in inserted near the end made the engineer give me a quizzical look through the double glass window.

Here it is for posterity:

"I would like to thank the State Road Department for building the Palmetto Expressway, without which I never would have arrived on time." [WFUN was on Sunset Drive in South Miami, near the south end of the Palmetto Expressway, a/k/a State Road 826.]
