(January 11, 2007) ... I asked "Jammin'" Jon Sommers, formerly evening deejay on now-defunct WJNA's All-Request Oldies Show, if he had any good stories about his experiences at WJNA.

"My whole show on WJNA was predicated on the sincere love and passion I have for the music of the '50, 60's and 70's that no other station will play as well as the dedication I had to my listeners" said Sommers. "It proved that if I give the listeners what they want, they will find and support me as well as my sponsors no matter what delivery system is being used....whether it's AM, FM, Satellite or Internet radio."

His story about Hurricane Wilma follows. Thanks, Jon!

How "Jammin" Jon Sommers
Brought Oldies Back To WJNA
After Hurricane Wilma

I think the one that comes to mind most is when WJNA got knocked off the air for several weeks following Hurricane Wilma in late October, 2005.

With no hard-line phone service, very limited cell phone service and no internet/email service, communications between station personnel and myself were difficult at best.

Then, after repeated tries to get in touch with folks at the station, I got a cell phone call from my PD saying they were ready to bring WJNA back on the air. He went on to say that he only wanted me to bring it back with a bang so "go energize the station in a way that only you can do"....that quote has always stuck in my brain for some reason. That was at about 5 PM and I said I'd be there as soon as I could.

I brought the station back on the air that night and with no commercial log prepared I went "All-Request" and commercial-free starting at 7PM for five straight hours until midnight with not one break. (Man, did I need to use the men's room as soon as midnight came around!!!) Not knowing whether folks would be listening since WJNA was off the air for so long, I did not know what to expect. What I got was a show that warmed my heart.

I took literally dozens and dozens of calls one after another all saying how much they missed me and the music I was playing since no other station was doing it (I believe you did a small article about that...check your archives).
See Wilma Does Florida Radio in November 2005 Radio News.

Many went on to say that they were checking 640-AM every night at 7PM to see if I was back on the air and when it finally happened they were elated since they missed my type of music and my way of presenting it. That one night out of all the years I had been on radio synopsized why I was doing what I was doing....it just felt good!!!!

Currently, Jon Sommers hosts a Friday night oldies dance in Plantation.
