"I believe that all government is evil, and that trying to Miami Market Radio Ratings Commentary: Spring Trendsby Miami radio veteran George SheldonPosted June 7, 2008. Also posted this week:
(June 6, 2008) ... It's time to talk about the ratings again in the Magic City: Last month we focused on the winter book now the spring trends are here and I would like to focus on the 10 top radio stations in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market.
We concentrated on the population which I will mention one more time because I feel the program directors need to understand why certain stations keep falling and others stay right where they are: drastically changing demographics. As of June 5th, the 12 plus population is 3,505,100 black was 20% at 701,400 and finally Hispanic which is 45% of the total population at 1,578,700. WAMR went up slightly to a 6.5 as the number one station in the market! Number 2 in the market is WEDR (99 JAMZ), home of DJ Khaled. They went up from the winter book from 5.2 to now a 6.1. That's great for this time of year. And #3 in the market is WCMQ went from a 6.2 to a 5.8. Next, #4 is Hot 105 they went from a 4.9 to a 5.3. CONGRATS to Rob Sidney for racking up a great LIFE for WLYF, 5th in the market. They went from a 4.2 to a 4.8. Then there is Power 96 which came in at #6 and went up slightly from a 4.5 to a 4.6. They seem to be holding their own. Number 7 this time was WAQI. It's wacky that they went down since their winter book, 4.9 to 4.4. Number 8 Y-100 went WAY down from a 4.1 to a 3.7, so I am guessing more terminations. But the next Clear Channel stations after this are ranked much worse, numbers 12 through 15! Then at #9, WFLC The Coast finally went up a little from 3.3 to 3.6. Number 10 WRTO went up from a 3.0 to 3.3. Magic 102.7 was at number 11, dropping from 3.3 to 3.1. Then 103 SHE (Oops, I mean WMIB) came in at number 12 with numbers 3.6 to a 3.0, way down again. After all this Love 94 went way down. They came in at number 13 with 2.7, their lowest rating in years. Coming in at #14 was WIOD at a 2.4 and falling rapidly. But it's now hurricane season, so this may quickly improve. Number 15 was Big 106 WBGG, their lowest rating EVER at a 2.3. Maybe because they dumped Doc Reno. Then #16 Kiss Country WKIS at 2.1 had their lowest rating EVER. Even WQAM was in at number 17 with a 2.1, their highest rating since last summer. Then another surprise: WINZ came in at a number 20 with a lowly 1.7. Clear Channel's progressive talk does even worse than its news/talk! LOL! Folks, now it's not just the market diversity that's to blame. It's the fact that one out of every three homes are in foreclosure. Rents are up 50%. People are just packing their shit and leaving. THAT IS THE TRUTH OF WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND IT ALL STARTED WITH HURRICANE WILMA IN October 2005. Well, we will see what happens for the July trends. WIOD will continue failing unless we have a hurricane and I know that for fact because I worked there for 3 years -- that was commonly known. I'll keep monitoring from my home in Western North Carolina and I wish everyone safety. PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR HURRICANES, JUST IN CASE. Remember, hurricanes may be good for WIOD but they can be hazardous to your health. Thank you, George! Also see: Former WIOD Traffic Reporter George Sheldon

"Subtlety and other foreign languages not spoken here." -- Rabbi Larry Finkelstein Miami Market Radio Ratings Commentary: Winter ArbsWFTL Ties WJNO?by Miami radio veteran George Sheldon
WFTL did not even show up in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale book but in the West Palm Beach book it showed 2.1, the same rating as WJNO! Polling results can be strange. [Keep this in mind next time someone says the exit polls are right and the election results are wrong. People do lie and polls are merely polls. - Ed]
This book has the top two as Hispanic. WAMR fall of '07 was a 5.6 and they went way up to a whopping 6.3. In second place is WCMQ: fall of '07 5.4 and winter of '08 is now 6.2. Let's talk about the population of South Florida which consists of 3,538,400. 45.6% of that figure is Hispanic and 20.1% is black then there is the rest of us. WEDR 99 JAMZ has always done well. They went up one rating point from a 4.2 to a 5.2 then back to the other side of the coin. Univision's 710 AM WAQI has dropped slightly from a 5.4 to a 4.9 -- but I must add all the news talk outlets went down this book. WIOD went from 2.6 to a 2.5, 14th in the market and WINZ went from a 1.5 to a 1.4, 23rd in the market. All those listeners are going to Love 94, which is #12 in the market. They went from a 4.2 to a 3.1. Hot 105 WHQT went down as well, from a 5.7 to a 4.9. Almost all of the English-speaking radio stations have gone down because of the diversity in the population -- not any program directors fault. Remember Miami has turned into a very strange market to survey. That is one reason why they are continuous, which means there are monthly trends. Now here is one station that went up: Beasley's WPOW Power 96 went up from a 4.3 to a 4.5. They have made adjustment to their music. CONGRATS to them. Then there IS WLYF 101.5. They have been consistently going down since Winter 2007. Oone year ago their winter book was a 5.1, spring of '07 4.9, summer '07 4.0, fall of '07 4.5 and finally last winter, 4.2. It's not the music most of the music that age demo 25-54 male and female mostly grew up listening to. Again it's my opinion it the diverse population that's causing the 12 plus rating. On another positive side WHYI has a new logo and they have made some music adjustments therefore they went up from a 3.4 to 4.2 which is a decent raise. 103.5 WMIB has also seen a raise from 3.2 to a 3.6 and finally the coast WFLC what a great radio station but they went down just a little 3.4 to a 3.3. On a final note WFTL, did not even show up in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale book, but in the West Palm Beach book, I have noticed a continual climb 14th in the market with a 2.1 (same rating as WJNO) For a laugh, WIOD showed up the the West Palm book at #28 in the market with a 0.9 share 12 plus. I am seeing a lot of change both in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach books because of diversity. The group owners are in denial if they think FM radio is going to make a comeback. Sirius, which will be the largest Satcaster, already has millions of subscribers. Need I say more? Thank you, George! Also see: Former WIOD Traffic Reporter George Sheldon

"Radio news is bearable. This is due to the fact that while the news is Miami Market Radio Ratings Commentary: March Trendsby Miami radio veteran George SheldonPosted April 20, 2008. Also posted this week: (March 2008) ... Now let's talk about the 12 plus ratings in Miami. Miami's Hispanic population wins again with the three major stations topping Clear Channel, Lincoln Financial, Beasley, and Cox.
Come on guys if you want to be number one, let's do something creative. I am not surprised by WIOD's low rating because they DID NOT have a natural disaster last year. WIOD depends on a hurricane a year for their fall book. Well that did not happen and you see the result a 2.4 plus a complete change in news and traffic staff. Clear Channel is known to piss off the listeners by doing odd things with their talent. Oh that's right, they no longer have any talent worth speaking of except Richard Lewis doing traffic but he is not a George Sheldon and far from it. Joe Brennan and I were the best traffic reporters in South Florida and Clear Channel could not stand to have decent talent and now the end result a 2.4 which will keep going lower because of the diverse population and lack of hurricanes. As far as the other Clear Channel stations most of their talent is canned voice tracked except WHYI and the morning show on WBGG. They let go Doc Reno -- HUGE mistake. He was one of the finest air talents around. Clear Channel: I understand the cut backs, but why are you punishing the listeners too? If you want to cut more cut Lori Sheppard you don't need a news director for a news department that consists on 3 or 4. That's a waste of say $75k plus benefits. Now on with the ratings. Cox's 97.3 The Coast at a 3.2: They have made some adjustments. What they should have done is made Gnarly Charlie the full-time mid-day or afternoon guy. He is a legend in South Florida and has a proven track record. Oh that's right, resumes that are 20+ years old are ignored. Again a mistake. Power 96 is holding their own but they should continue to go back to their roots -- maybe a change in format to techno dance? And finally Lincoln Financial's WLYF. I can remember a day when I first got into radio they were #1 with a 12 share or higher. Now they are #7 in the market I guess you can say they are holding their own. Rob Sidney needs to tweak his promotions and music a little that might bring up their ratings and beat the top three. Thank you, George! Also see: Former WIOD Traffic Reporter George Sheldon
