Miami Saxophone Quartet in Live Performance at WLRN
Stellar Jazz musicians and educators, Gary Keller, Gary Lindsay, Ed
Calle and Mike Brignola (augmented by bassist Jaime Ousley) will
perform new arrangements and original compositions from their fourth
recording, Fourtified Rich tonal colors and intricate harmonic lines complement improvised solos from this group of South Florida Jazz leaders, who have studied and performed the entire history of the genre for decades. Add to that their explorations into Pop, Latin, R&B and chamber music and you have a contemporary sound quite unique among sax quartets, as well as Jazz groups in general. |

Randi Rhodes Coming BackBut, like
General McArthur
Rhodes' slot on WJNO is now held by
Sean Hannity It's nice to be able to listen to Sean Hannity on at his normal time on WJNO, rather the delayed time on WIOD. The good news for Rhodes fans is that Premiere Networks will be bringing her back on May 11th. Where will she go in south Florida? Replacing Schnitt or Hannity on WIOD? Only if WIOD wants to alienate its core audience. WQAM? She might make a good hookup for like-minded Neil Rogers. But complainers have three other Miami market sports stations to choose from, per the preceding article. In WPB, she'll probably displace Hannity in her old slot. Until then, Rhodes fans can read Randi Rhodes, Before She Was Famous, part of South Florida Radio History. |

The Winter Arbs(April 25, 2009) ... George Sheldon, recovering from ear surgery, is still opinionated about south Florida radio and who is doing what on the air and in the Arbs. "I have been out of Clear Channel for a couple of years and they still go through talent like diapers for a newborn and how they still end up with being #9 in the market is beyond me" opines George. Read George Sheldon's Commentary on Miami's Winter 2009 Rating Book [To be posted week of 5/4]. |

WKRP OnlineWKRP can be seen on cable channel WGN from 7 'til 8 PM Sundays. If that's not convenient, you could buy DVDs at
Amazon.com's WKRP Store In the final scene of tonight's episode about the return of Johnny Fever, Bailey is wearing a lowder-blue sweatshirt that says Thomas Schippers. Never heard of him. It turns out that he was a conductor for the Metropolitan Opera. What a great obscure bit of trivia. At right, another TV show about radio: NewsRadio. |

Maybe I Was Wrong About Local Radio (Editorial)(April 24, 2009) ... Whenever someone tells me how much he likes satellite radio, I always speak in defense of local radio, because I like local content. But maybe I have to reluctantly admit that mismanagement by the station's (mis)management is proving me wrong. You already know about the scourge of voice tracking. Most of the non-syndicated music programs you hear on the radio (purporting to be live and local) have been prerecorded by someone out of state (probably while he's doing another radio program or two). What you ultimately hear is prerecorded comments, with the music inserted by computer at the station. It takes maybe 45 minutes to record a four-hour show. But that's not the only problem. How long do you think WIOD devotes to local news? Maybe a couple of minutes, twice an hour? Is that enough time to report the important news? Barely. But maybe nothing important happened today. They couldn't even find enough news to fill the Mini-Me newscast. This morning, I was listening to a WIOD newscast during Glenn Beck, and in their tiny news hole, they deemed it important to tell listeners that NBC's Today Show will be broadcast from Key West one day next month with Jimmy Buffet as a guest. Big *** Deal! Wow, that's important news! Maybe nothing noteworthy has been done by the crooks in DC, Tallahassee, and the county courthouse, and nothing else of any importance has happened in the rest of Florida, the Caribbean, the middle east, the war zone, the left coast, the frozen north, or anyplace else on earth since Wednesday. Yes, I know that some stations leave time for a funny item at the end of an hour-long newscast, notably the 6 PM Special Report on Fox News. But this lame news item was neither timely (next month), humorous, newsworthy, or relevant (out of market). It was basically a promo for NBC-TV, disguised as news, because someone was too lazy to go beyond reading press releases to fill the news hole. It's advertising disguised as news, broadcast by people who don't know anything about news, to titillate other people who don't know anything about news. Maybe, contrary to their promos about timely news, they should read the Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald to find out what's relevant in local news to fill the newscast. Or maybe even listen to Hannity, Beck, Schnitt, and Limbaugh on their own station. And especially listen to Joyce Kaufman on WFTL 850. She's local and knows a bit about what's important to listeners. Maybe this explains why the voters are so uninformed. They depend on radio and TV for their news. If you don't believe me, watch these post-election interviews. If you have a strong stomach, that is. (But it's funny, in a way.) |
