WKPX Blues Deejay Dar Is A Radio Pirate At Heart
(Sunrise, FL) ... Revealed at last! Here's the pirate radio picture the National Enquirer has been dying to see: Local blues deejay Dar and her producer, Mr. G, at the annual pirate party. Arrrgh! Sunday Blues With Daris heard Sunday mornings from 10 AM 'til 1 PM on WKPX 88.5, the low-power school board station at Piper High School in Sunrise. Or you can listen at BlueAtHeart.com. Dar recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of Sunday Blues With Dar.
WFTL's Joyce Kaufman Returning To DC
At WFTL, local talkmaster Joyce Kaufman planning her return to DC in September, to remind congresscritters and presidential candidates "that we are broke, busted and disgusted." This time, she's eschewing shoes, and is collecting "your old empty wallets and purses to make our point." Unlike the theives in Washingtom and Tallahassee, she just wants to take your old wallets and purses, not the contents. Last year, Joyce brought truckloads of Floridians' old shoes, sandals, and boots (maybe even pirate boots) to DC to dump on congressional desks. See WFTL's Joyce Kaufman Needs Your Old Shoes To "Hold Their Feet to the Fire" And Stop Illegal Immigration in April 2007 Radio News.
ManCow Now on Pirate 95.9 Radio(Sebastian, FL -- July 16, 2008) ... If you've missed ManCow since the unfortunate demise of WMEN, you can catch him just up the road, at "Pirate 95.9" WSJZ-FM in Sebastian. (It's a legal station.)

QUOTE... "We are gradually being sold to the rest of the world at a discount...because of the tax code.".... Herman Cain (substituting on the Neal Boortz Show), commenting on the sale of Anheuser-Busch and the Chrysler building to foreign companies. "This country is losing its competitive advantage because of a tax code that is outdated." (See The Fair Tax Book: Saying Goodbye to the Income Tax and the IRS
Beasley Brings Legal Pirate Radio To Miami on HD(Miami, FL -- July 17, 2008) ... WPOW-FM is bringing a new kind of pirate radio to Miami. Not the illegal kind of pirate that illegally interferes with legitimate stations. South Florida is already famous for them! (See WMKL "The Call" Tracks Down Pirate Radio Stations in Miami in South Florida Radio History.)
No, Beasley's Miami cluster is pleased to announce that through the technology of HD Radio, Power 96 is now multicasting unique programming on its sister station, 96-2 Pirate Radio. HD2 broadcasts can be heard for free in crystal clear, CD-quality sound for those with access to a multicast-capable HD Radio receiver. 96-2 Pirate Radio airs the hottest reggae, calypso, dance-hall, soca and roots-island sounds, with sassy delivery and imaging that capture the essence of pirate radio, while abiding by the rules. 96 DASH 2 Pirate Radio is completely licensed and legal, with the obligatory an air of disrespect and irreverence. Thomas Manning, WPOW General Manager, commented, "With the ethnic diversity in South Florida, 96 Dash 2 Pirate Radio provides a genre of entertainment that really caters to a core segment of the population. And as listeners in general are increasingly more vocal about music choices, this should definitely fill a void in the South Florida community." "With South Florida being the pirate radio capital of the world, this was a natural for us!" added Tom 7/14/08 Beasley Miami Introduces 96 Dash 2 Pirate Radio Page 2 Calococci, Program Director for Power 96. "It's also a great way to get people excited about HD radio and the free choices that are available - and now that includes 96 Dash 2 Pirate Radio." Pirate Radio is not yet available on the Power 96 web site, but they're working on it. With the loss of two Caribbean-=format stations in recent years, WSRF 1580 (now Kreyol) and WFLL 1400 (now sports), WPOW's pirate channel will be a welcome addition. Too bad you need a HD radio.... but this is the best excuse to buy one that I've heard yet.

QUOTE... "The thousands of mortgage defaults and foreclosures in the 'subprime' housing market (i.e., mortgage holders with poor credit ratings) is the direct result of thirty years of government policy that has forced banks to make bad loans to un-creditworthy borrowers."... Radio Stunt For Kid's Naming Rights
(Orlando -- July 12, 2008) ... When WHTQ morning hosts Richard Dixon and J. Willoughby offered a $100 gas card to the Orlando area listener who called in with the most interesting item to trade, David Partin came up with the most interesting item: naming rights, Not the naming rights to a stadium but the right to name his unborn child. The kid's name will be Dixon and Willoughby Partin. Partin's pregnant girlfriend Samantha points out that although the name is strange, "after he grows up some, he'll always have a story about his name." His initials will be D&WP, the name of a British company that supplies Drug Awareness Resources. Maybe Partin can hit them up for scholarship money. I wonder, how will the kid sign his name? With the word and, with a plus sign (+), or with an ampersand (&)? See $100 offer for baby's name gives dad gas in the Orlando Sentinel.

Nat Trayger + Liberal Barry on Middleground
Remember Nat Trayger from the pre-James Crystal WFTL? Nat's back for one hour, at 4 PM every Saturday afternoon, with Liberal Barry, on WWNN 1470. "He is Catholic, liberal, and gay. He's Liberal Barry. He is Jewish, conservative and married, he's the last educated man in America, Dr Nat Trayger. Can these two find middleground?" If you miss the show, you can listen to or download the archives, the Middleground podcast on TalkShoe.com. FCC Discusses Minority Ownership of Media Outlets

WFTL's Ritter Re-Elected
(Broward County, FL -- June 2008) ... Broward County Commissioner and WFTL weekend radio personality Stacy Ritter was re-elected by default in June, when no one else had filed to run for her seat on the Broward County Commission. Congratulations, Stacy! I guess that means four more years of listening to Rush's Babe on WFTL. Unless, of course, she's appointed to be a DC bureaucrat next year, that is. She's Broward chairwoman of Obama for America. For some background info about the ethically-challenged commish (and why her automatic re-election is both tragic and funny), see Rush's Babe, Stacy Ritter, Gets Radio Show, The Stacy 'n' Russ Show, and Return to Sender, all in New Times. Amusing but true!
