(Pompano Beach, FL -- March 16, 2007) ... Marc Goulet, one of
the foremost advertisers on WWNN's Steve Kane Show and the host of his
own brokered weekend show, was arrested by Broward sheriff's deputies
for practicing medicine without a license.
Goulet's six clinics on the Gold Coast and Florida's west coast mostly
have vatiations of the name British Diagnostics.
"On radio and in magazines, Marc Goulet was a doctor and expert on sexuality and erectile dysfunction, touting treatments available at his six medical clinics, one in Sarasota" said David Gulliver of the Herald Tribune, in 'Doctor' charged with lack of license.
Thursday moning, a check of the Steve Kane Show web site showed that British Diagnostics had already been removed from the list of advertisers.
On a related note, shorty before hearing of the Goulet story, I had e-mailed producer Brian Craig about errors on the site, and he replied "We will have a totally new site online at StevekaneShow.com shortly. Maybe by next week."

MARCH 2007: SECTION 3 of 4 ⇒ Peter Bolger, WMKL
Moves to 91.9, Don Agony, Radio Sex Discrimination, Footy's Back |
|||||
Peter Bolger Has | |||||
It's a little more subdued and a little more educational than the old show, but it's still fun, and he's still the same wild and crazy guy.
I had heard that the agreement for the new show was signed days after the traditional non-compete agreement ran out. Gimme a break!
One can't help wondering if waiting for the end of the noncompete agreement was just a little unnecessary BS, for p.r. value.. Since Clear Channel owns both WIOD and Y-100, suggesting that the agreement was a factor is ludicrous. Footy and CC at any moment could have agreed to amend the agreement to allow the show to start before the time was up!
(Key Largo, FL -- March 17, 2007) ... Christian music station "91.7
The Call" WMKL is changing their name, but not their stripes. They're
moving up the dial a notch to 91.9, as of Monday, March 19th. I asked
WMKL president and general manager Rob Robbins to explain why, and the
following is his explanation:
Apparently the 5th harmonic frequency of 91.7 MHz (91.7 x 5), which is
458.5 MHz, when modulated ± 75 kHz overlaps two Monroe County Public
Safety frequencies (458.825 and 458.125) - the 458.5 is right in the
middle and the modulation makes signal go higher than 458.825 and lower
than 458.125.
A 50,000-watt station is required by the FCC to have any harmonic
signals attenuated down 80 dB from the carrier level (all transmitters
accomplish this through filtering and design. 50,000 watts attenuated
80 dB is about 0.5 watts of emission. Not a lot of signal, but given
that the county is receiving on the two frequencies with antennas about
20 feet above WMKL's antenna on the same tower signals coming from fire
rescue and ems radios that are 4 watts power and many miles away are
overpowered by WMKL's harmonic and can't be received on the tower. That
is the main problem.
Another problem is that even without an actual
harmonic, receivers around WMKL's strong 50kW signal can generate the
same harmonic inside their equipment, just by converting the 91.7 MHz
carrier signal. This is likely a problem that has always existed and
the 2005 year's move to the county's tower made it more apparent,
allowing the problem to be identified.
The FCC approved this change on Feb. 20th to 91.9 MHz and expedited
the decision in about a weeks time. Same 50 kW signal coverage which
is fortunate for us that we could pull this off.
We should be temporarily at 5kW on 91.9 MHz on Monday for about two
weeks until the new antenna arrives, then 50 kW again for good.
February 2000 sign-on of "The Call" for the first
time.
Thanks, Rob!

I don't do gossip, and this is just slightly more substantial than pure gossip. So I'm going to hold my nose and here goes, reluctantly:
A former member of the news/traffic team in a certain local radio cluster says he is looking into filing a sexual discrimination case.
But nothing has happened and he apparently hasn't gotten any of the local media interested in exploiting his story yet.
I can see Neil Rogers, New Times, City Link, the Community newspapers, and Steve Kane jumping on the story, at the very least, for varying reasons. Ol' Neil would especially enjoy this story.

He reports that remaining employees have been told that anyone who talks to him will be fired. So that's evidently a news story that will be ignored by the station and its news partners. Oh boy, a coverup scandal!
Watch for more info in a future issue, if there becomes any definite news to report.
I wonder, does Clear Channel make sure the news is read by people who are fluent in English and therefore understand what they are reading to know if it is timely?
Apparently not. Otherwise they'd have realized that it was last week's news they were repeating. (Anna Nicole Smith was buried March 2. The lunar eclipse was March 3.) Or are they just automatons, like the computer-generated voice that tells you what floor you are on in some downtown office buildings?
Or maybe the usual radio consultants had told Clear Channel that the gossip-starved public wants Anna Nicole Smith news, dead or not!

| Tell everyone about this page, so it can have bumper to bumper hits like I-95 did, per the inscription on the I-95/WINZ mug above! |
Following is Stu's story. Thanks, Stu!
When I worked for I-95/WINZ-FM in the early 80's on Sunday nights,
we aired a syndicated program called "The Satellite Top 30 Countdown".
It was on 6 to 9 PM, and I was on from 9 to 1 AM. It was the last
day of March and April 1st was Monday.
If you've heard me on the air & knew how I pulled pranks, you knew
what that ment. I HAD to do something for April fools day since I
wouldn't be on Monday. During the breaks of the countdown show, I just
decided to go on saying "This is Stuart Elliott...join me after the
countdown for my final show on I-95." Bam...back into the
program.....I did this for about an hour, between 7 and 8. People
started calling and asking what was up, and I said I'd explain when I
went on at 9. I even got calls from staffers asking if what I said was
true. Of course I had to let them in on the pre-April Fools day joke.
When I got on at 9, I started playing back people who called in asking
why I was leaving.
It was funny, but I really felt bad for some of these listeners.
They'd say things like "Stuart, I know I'll miss your voice on the
air" or "I've been listening to you for years, I can't believe you're
leaving". I was feeling guilty on one hand, but jumping up and down on
the other hand, knowing I've pulled off another prank. at the 12:50
stop-set,
I said "Ok, as promised, I will tell you what you've wanted to
know. I want to thank everyone who's called with their kind words and
best wishes."
"This is one of the most difficult things i've ever had to say....
I'M NOT GOING ANYWERE!.... APRIL FOOLS!!!" I explained that I felt bad
doing this, but since I wasn't going to be on offically for April 1st,
I had to get my prank in. With that, I gave the ID and went into the
stop. The phones lit up. Most of the people were really cool with it
and laughed along, saying they really had been taken, that it was very
believable. Then you had the others who didn't appreciate being
sandbagged and they in turn told me to drop dead, hope you get fired,
KMA, FU and all the things that go with getting hoodwinked.
April Fool's Day on the air was always special for me and hopefully
for listeners who enjoyed a good joke and creativity.
If you milk them, they will come! I said due to contractual
agreements, I wasn't allowed to specify what or why or whom, but at
the end of my shift, my contract was over and I'll fill everyone in.
As I've said, and I'll go to my radio grave saying this:
Radio Is Theater Of The Mind. If you have enough to back what you're
doing up, just about everyone will believe you. Being the joker I am,
I kept putting people on the air asking why.
Following are some CDs that might be heard at the 96X reunion...
some of Stuart's favorites.
-- Earth, Wind & Fire
-- Bee Gees
-- ZZ Top
-- Stevie Wonder
-- Paul McCartney & Wings

the station's final sign-off in 1981. See 96X...Gone, But Not
Forgotten in November 2006 Radio News.
Stuart Elliott's next public appearance will be at the big 96X reunion. "The actual affair, 'tho closed to the public and fans, is not limited to just former staff members" says Stuart.
96X-Era Reunion |
"It's on Saturday April 28th in Golden Beach, and if any announcers who were on air in South Florida during the days of X and would like to come, they could contact me at: The96XFactor (AT) aol.com and I'll make sure they're set up."
I know this description fits a LOT of Radio News readers. Be there or be square!

I have suggested to the people planning BOTH reunions, 96X and WFUN, that if there is sufficient interest, a reunion open to the public could be scheduled in the future, maybe at someplace like C.B. Smith Park. Several years ago there was a WFTL reunion at Padrino's restaurant in Plantation with most of the local talkers from the old WFTL 1400 and enough fans to fill the whole place! |
