(October, 2006) ... Kenny Walker, of Y-100's Kenny &
Footy Fame, is back on the air. He's now heard weekdays on WQAM 560
from 7 'til 10 AM with Kim Bokamper on The Kenny & Bo
Show. Right before Neil Rogers.
Budell @ Reunion
(August 14, 2006) ... WJNA's Greg Budell recently emceed the
20-year reunion for Piper High School.

WFTL Makes Big Changes
(Fort Lauderdale, FL -- October 13, 2006) ... James Crystal's talk
station WFTL 850 (Formerly "Live 85" until it dropped almost all
local programming for syndicated talk) is making big changes to their
daily
lineup as of Monday, October 16th: Some good, some bad.
Bill O'Reilly will no longer be delayed and will no longer be
padded with a so-called "bonus hour" of reruns, when The Radio
Factor moves to the noon 'til 2 slot. O'Reilly's latest book,
Culture Warrior,
was published in September.
After O'Reilly will be the triumphant return of local talk (James
Crystal, what took you so long?), from 2 'til 4 PM when Joyce
Kaufman returns from sister station WJNA.
Joyce Kaufman
Joyce was an excellent
WFTL talker long before James Crystal bought the station. Her talents
are much more suited to intelligent talk than dumb segues on WJNA.
Joyce will return to WFTL weekdays on 10/23, after her vacation. The
last time WFTL experimented with local talk, with Kelley
Mitchell, they weren't patient enough to wait for an audience to
find her. (After so many changes, I hope they've learned from the
experience. Keep Joyce!)
Joyce Kaufman will be followed by a member of the
Babylon 5
cast, Jerry Doyle, from 4 'til 6 pm. Sorry... It's talk, not sci-fi.
Now the bad news...
James Crystal Trying To Kill Boortz Show?
The bad news is, James Crystal is apparently trying to lose the
audience for The Neal Boortz Show -- maybe to give them an
excuse for cancelling it?
Neal Boortz is a breath of fresh air in syndicated talk radio. A
real-live libertarian in a medium monopolized by left-wing and
right-wing extremists.
James Crystal, owner of five south Florida stations, is moving
Boortz from his delayed noon 'til 3 slot on WFTL to the 9 PM slot on
their Christian station WLVJ 1040. Dumb move.
As a libertarian, Boortz equally skewers the religious right and
the big-government left, which will make him as popular with
typical WLVJ listeners as ants at a picnic.
Putting libertarian Boortz between conservative O'Reilly and
liberal Kaufman would have made WFTL the ultimate fair-and-balanced
station. Instead they bring in Doyle, who bills himself as an
"independent conservative" -- whatever that is.
Watch for an early
cancellation of Boortz. But don't worry... after they James Crystal
kills off the show locally, you'll still be able to listen to Boortz
mornings on wsbradio.com. (With
WLVJ's poor nighttime signal, that's my only choice.)
The Best of Boortz will still be heard on WFTL Sunday evenings.
Addendum: WFTL's Ken Pauli says "WFTL isn't 'trying' to kill
Neal Boortz. We did. While Dr. Laura, Bill O'Reilly and Michael Savage
are pulling good numbers in our target demo, ratings for Boortz were,
unfortunately, a big failure. It's a shame since, in your words, Neal
is a breath of fresh air. I agree! Too bad South Florida wasn't ready
for that breeze."
Changes at WJNA, Too
Big changes are coming to James Crystal's WJNA 640, too, but
there
is no confirmation of details yet. Watch for an update of this
paragraph by the end of October.
Addendum: Monday October 23, WJNA will become "Mantalk 640"
WMEN. Here's the new schedule, as it suddenly appeared on the WJNA web
site Sunday night. (Yes, I checked a few times.)
Mancow -- 6 AM to noon
Jim Rome -- noon to 3
Don & Mike -- 3 to 7 PM
Tom Leykis -- 7 to 10 PM
Rusty Humphries -- 10 PM to 1 AM
Tammy Bruce -- 1 to 4 AM
In other WJNA news, Ken Held's Doo-Wop Shop will be from 4 'til 7
Sundays on WLVJ. Chris MacDonald will be from 7 'til 8 Sundays on
WLVJ.
Will Majic 102.7 Flip?
(October 15, 2006) ... With Majic's dip in the ratings, people are
rumoring about a change of format under the new Lincoln Financial
ownership.
The rumors are fed by the existence of a parked domain, movin1027.com.
Movin is a new radio format, targeted to women 25-44, created by Alan
Burns and Associates. The Burns web site explains
"Women love rhythmic
music. And starting in the mid to late ‘80s, young radio listeners
began to prefer rhythmic music over other styles."
There is some speculation locally that Majic or one of several other
local stations may adopt the Movin' format.
Will Movin' be movin to Majic? Rumors are flying but the domain
could belong to a station in NY or elsewhere. We'll see.
(October, 2006) ... Well,
we're past the hump of hurricane season, but this 'find" on the WIRK
web site is worth noting for future reference: Gas
Stations with Generators.
Michael Savage On 9/11 Anniversary
(September 11, 2006) ... In the first hour of his 9/11 show, heard
from 6 'til 9 PM on WFTL 850, Michael Savage played a staccato series
of his remarks about the terrorist attacks, from the intro to his
9/11/01 program.
"America... this is your Pearl Harbor.... You will not have a
nation unless you stand up like a man... Ladies and gentlemen, what
will it take for this country to close the borders?... Japan's
kamikaze attacks only ended after Truman dropped two atomic bombs on
their homeland... Kamikazes don't act alone" said Savage. "Do you know
that your comfort level will never be the same forever.... Egyptians
celebrating in Cairo... Where is the muscular reaction?" He even asked
"Where is Bush and Cheney?"
Savage is author of several political books, in addition to books
about science from his pre-radio career. For more about Savage and his
latest book, the hilarious The Political Zoo, see
Look Inside
the Savage Nation.
Gary Lawrence/Tiny Tim Video
(August, 2006) ... Gary Lawrence, who was music director of the
WLQY Music Of Your Life Orchestra and bandleader of the WFTL
Orchestra, recorded several songs with Tiny Tim in the 1980s, in his
inimitable 1920s style.
Now the video of my
favorite,
Do You Think I'm Sexy, by Tiny Tim with Gary Lawrence and His
Sizzling Syncopators, has been converted to a digital file. (Unlike
Rod Stewart's version, you can actually understand the funny lyrics.)
It's now available for everyone to see online, right on this page:
Even though he was best known for his novelty song, Tiptoe Through
The Tulips, Tiny Tim was a serious music historian. He performed this
song in the style of Al Jolson.
(Palm Beach County, FL -- August 9, 2006) ... Bruno Moore, a former
South Florida WIRK country music station disc jockey, TV traffic
reporter, and substitute teacher, was arrested Tuesday for trying to
seduce a 13-year-old girl online, investigators said.
Moore was hired this year by the Martin County school district to
teach English at Sandy Pines, a psychiatric treatment facility in
Tequesta where he had worked as a substitute teacher.
Local WIRK radio personality BRUNO MOORE has been arrested for
allegedly trying to seduce a 13-year-old girl online. We were shocked
to find out how many teenage girls are his "friends"! Police suspect
their might be more victims, so please check to make sure your
daughter is not on his "friend" list.
Kudos to WRMF and especially their webmaster. Posting this kind of
info is a great community service. After all some people don't watch
the 11 o'clock news but do surf the web for news. There are a lot of
interesting and off-the-wall news items on the Jennifer
& Danny Show page at WRMF. Check out the gargoyle item!
Dream Doctor Announces He Has Lou Gehrig's Disease, Ends Program
(October 18, 2006) ... Dream Doctor Charles McPhee was recently
diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), at the young age of 44. He
shared the news with listeners in an unprecedented radio program that
first aired August 3. You can listen to it on his web site, DreamDoctor.com.
"His show is officially over this weekend." says WFTL's Ken Pauli. He says that "Best
of" shows have been running for two months. The Dream Doctor was heard Sundays on WFTL 850.
WFLC's Missing Girl In The Morning, Deena Lang, Doing Fine on WRMF
(West Palm Beach, FL -- -- August 9, 2006) ... The missing girl of
of Coast FM's Two Girls In The Morning has turned up on mornings a few
counties north, on "South Florida's VARIETY Station" WRMF 97.9 in the
Palm Veaches.
The South Florida Radio Pages need your support!
Please click the button above to donate via PayPal.
Thank you!
"Here I am!!" said Lang, via e-mail. "To my listeners - I'd love
to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their unbelieveable
loyalty. There's nothing more rewarding than running into (or reading
an e-mail from)listeners who have followed me as I've transitioned
through my career. I absolutely LOVE the position I'm in right now
and am thankful to work with a group of such kind, intelligent, crazy,
funny, experienced people."
Deena Lang can be heard weekday mornings from 6 'til 10 on WRMF
97.9, along with Jennifer Ross, Danny Czekalinski, Bill Ryan, and
Paul Cavanaugh, on the Jennifer & Danny Show.
World-class trumpeter Arturo Sandoval
performed live on Ed Bell's Arts Beat, June 28 in the WLRN Studios. The
performance was sponsored by Pollo Tropical and Fiji Water.
And
what a show it was! ... lasting almost a full hour of live jazz, with
very little talk.

A Prairie Home Companion
If you missed the Prairie Home Companion movie, based on the
long-running NPR radio show featuring Garrison Keillor, take
heart. The DVD is now available:
A Prairie Home Companion.
(October, 2006) ... The Steve Harvey Morning Show has been added to
the morning schedule of urban station WMIB "103.5 The Beat" from 6
'til 10 AM weekdays.
Harvey, one of the Kings
of Comedy, previously was the star of The Steve
Harvey Show on TV.
No relation to that other popular radio guy,
Paul Harvey,
that we know of!
Eric Brandon on Wife Swap: What Happened?
(October, 2006) ... After a long wait, Eric Brandon and wife Jessica made their
appearance on ABC-TV's Wife Swap TV show. What a disaster!
"I have been in utter shock since seeing how ABC-TV totally
destroyed me" said a disappointed Eric a couple of days later. "That
was the most unfair and untrue video representation. What they didn't
do was show reality but completely took scenes and pieced crap
together to make me the fall guy."
But maybe that's what reality TV audiences want. Eric looked up the
ratings for the Brandon edition of Wife Swap, and found that they got
"like a 9 share that night, compared to their usual 6 or 7."
I had never watched the show before, but after watching their
episode and parts of two others, I had already figured it out, even
before talking to Eric.
They take a somewhat normal couple and a
couple of weirdos and match them up, and manipulate the audience to
make the normal ones look bad and make the weirdos look interesting.
The weirdos in this case were a heavily-tattoed Arizona family with a
coffin in the living room, Mohawk haircuts, and death as the theme of
their home decor.
That should be no surprise to anyone who works in the media. But
ABC went way over the top. And, consequently, he's getting hate mail
from reality TV fans who think he's a jerk. People who really
need to get a life!
Meanwhile, Eric Brandon, former long-time lunchtime chef on Majic
102.7, is back on local radio. He's now heard Saturdays on WQAM 560
from 7 'til 9 AM on The Weekly Fisherman.

BoreAmerica dot com
A bunch of fans(?) have put together a site about the
liberal Air America Radio Network, BoreAmerica.com.
Their slogan is "Monitoring Air America Radio so you don't have to."
DeFede is the vanguard of the new, slow, and overdue movement away
from syndicated talk and back to local talk. He's heard weekday
mornings on Air America Affiliate WINZ 940.
Footy's Bubbles & Bones
The seventh annual Footy's Bubbles & Bones Gala will be
held Friday November 3 at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa. It is
an annual fund-raiser for Here's Help Inc..
Even though
Footy has retired from his Y-100 show after 32 years (as described in
May 2006 Radio News), he's staying active
with this charity.
Proceeds from Bubbles & Bones will benefit Here's Help Inc., which
has been providing substance abuse treatment to juveniles and young
adults in South Florida since 1968.
(August 15, 2006) ... The Major, a long-time fan of Y-100 and the
former Party 93.1, has established the huge Wikipedia page for WHYI "Y-100".
"I have since moved on with other exciting projects to include my hit
music web site, massivesmash.com" says The
Major.
The Massive Smash hit music site will be eleven years old
in November, and was started just weeks before the South Florida Radio
Pages.
He invites Y-100 fans and deejays, past and present, to get involved.
A lot of cooks have their hands in it already!
Un-Smooth Jazz On Love 94
(August 15, 2006) ... Jazz lovers who don't care for smooth jazz but can't pick up WDNA in south
Dade still have another resource for when WLRN 91.3 isn't playing jazz.
"Love 94" WLVE has two
Sunday jazz programs:
Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis, 7 'til 9 AM
Sunday Jazz Brunch with Stu Grant, 9 AM 'til 2 PM
WFTL "Outs" Candidate
(Fort Lauderdale, FL -- October 11, 2006) ... On Wednesday,
October 11th, which was officially "National Coming Out Day,"
News-Talk 850 WFTL, Fort Lauderdale, FL "outed" Florida conservative
Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist.
Kelley Mitchell from her
Deco Drive days ... where this kind of story really belongs!
Guest on the morning show with Kelley Mitchell & Russ Morley was 3rd
party candidate Max Linn. Linn told the WFTL audience that he's known
Crist for 25 years and even worked to help get him elected to other
offices. Linn said it was common knowledge in Tallahassee (the state
capitol) that Crist was gay, but it's never discussed. No response yet
from the Crist camp. ... from WFTL.
Since the "outer" is an opponent of the "outee" in next month's
elections, the event was more dirty politics than anything resembling
"coming out." Some people and radio stations will do anything for a
little publicity.
I'm voting for Crist, regardless.
For more about WFTL and its sixty-year history, see WFTL Radio.
Unlock The
Block by Nigel Lewis ... Another musical giant showcasing his many
talents, covering several genres. (Nigel’s dedication too speaking for
the unheard is made evident through the lyrics of Unlock the Block,
the theme song for the Felon Disenfranchisement campaign.)
I'm Still in Love with You, a re-release of
old school classics from Studio One through Heartbeat records is a must have
for reggae lovers, going back to the foundation of the music.
Rebelution by
Tanya Stephens ... This sister covers all topics as it relates to man
woman relationship plus more. Not real radio friendly, some cursing,
but enough is there to select a few for the radio and the rest off the
air. Good stuff.
More Radio Info From Local Personalities
As part of an effort to get more input from the people who we
listen to, we are now presenting music recommendations, too. We
welcome your input! In this section, we present recommendations
of new CDs, penned by WTPS's Eddy Edwards and WKIS's Jay Michaels.
Thanks, guys!
And more stories are on the way for Radio History!
Jay Michaels Recommends
WKIS's Jay Michaels, recommends another sensation with Miami roots.
"Sam Moore, the same Sam Moore of Miami of Sam and Dave fame, has a
tremendous album, Overnight
Sensational, with Wynonna, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill,
Springsteen, Sting, Steve Winwood, the late Billy Preston and more"
says Jay Michaels, heard locally on "99.9 Kiss Country" WKIS. "Many
country stations including KISS do not play it but people that love
country will love this album."
Each of the twelve tracks features Sam Moore plus one or more
other stars. Right now Overnight Sensational is ranked
#165 in music at Amazon.
Jay Michaels has an international following -- but more about that
in a future edition. Plus, watch for an upcoming article he's writing
for South Florida Radio History about one of south Florida's legendary
radio stations (one of my favorites) where he was a deejay and in
management, during his 30+ years in radio.
