AUGUST EXTRA 2006: SECTION 1 of 2 ⇒ FCC Wants Your Comments
Back Issues, & New HD Multicast Stations
This FCC item came up when we were working on the September edition. Obviously, it couldn't wait, so here is an "extra" edition of Radio News.

FCC Wants Your
Comments About Radio
By September 1st!

(Washington, DC -- August 18, 2006) ... Do you have comments or complaints about radio consolidation, like Clear Channel's 30+ stations between the Treasure Coast and the Keys?

Are you for or against obscenity and/or censorship on the radio?

The South Florida Radio Pages need your support!

Please click the button above to donate via PayPal.
Thank you!

Are there too many or too few ethnic stations? Are you for or against IBOC? What about low-power Part 15 and LPFM stations?

Now's your chance to make yourself heard by those bureaucrats who make the rules!

The FCC wants your comments. Its web site contains a notice, THE COMMISSION SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT IN THE 2006 BIENNIAL REVIEW OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS REGULATIONS.

They want your opinion by September 1. E-mail os OK.

Here's the introduction from the notice:

The FCC is in the process of conducting its comprehensive 2006 biennial review of telecommunications regulations pursuant to Section 11 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. § 161. This section requires the Commission (1) to review biennially its regulations “that apply to the operations or activities of any provider of telecommunications service,” and (2) to “determine whether any such regulation is no longer necessary in the public interest as the result of meaningful economic competition between the providers of such service.” The Commission is directed to repeal or modify any such regulations that it finds are no longer in the public interest.1

Pursuant to Section 1.430 of the Commission's rules, 47 C.F.R. § 1.430, we seek suggestions from the public as to what rules should be modified or repealed as part of the 2006 biennial review. Submissions should identify with as much specificity as possible the rule or rules that should be modified or repealed, and explain why and how the rule or rules should be modified or repealed. Parties should discuss how their suggested rule changes satisfy the standard of Section 11 as interpreted by the D.C. Circuit Court in Cellco Partnership. As with previous biennial reviews, we expect that FCC staff will prepare reports recommending which sections of the rules should be modified or repealed.

You can snail mail or e-mail comments or use the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System.

IMHO, the ownership rules should be changed so no company can own more than one AM and one FM in a market. What say you?

CBS and Clear Channel to Indroduce Ten New HD Multicasts to Palm Beaches

(August 18, 2006) ... This month, both Clear Channel and CBS Radio announced their intention to bring HD FM multicasts to their stations in the WPB market, for a total of ten new signals. A multicast is like a new station on the same frequency that can't be received on non-HD radios. But not all HD radios can receive multicasts; just the ones described as multicast-capable.

Details of the new stations follow the HD radio pictured below.

BOSTON ACOUSTICS Recepter Radio HD High Definition AM/FM Clock Radio

The price on the BOSTON ACOUSTICS Recepter Radio HD High Definition AM/FM Clock Radio was recently reduced to less than $300. It is one of the few models capable of receiving HD multicasts as described below.

Clear Channel and CBS Radio announced a total of ten new stations that will have HD2 broadcasts, per the tables below. Some of the interesting new formats to be tried include Country Southern Rock Blend, Old School Hip-Hop, Workout Channel, and Comedy.

AUGUST EXTRA 2006: SECTION 2 of 2 ⇒ WFTL History,
Birthdays, RadioPages Store, & RadioInsight.com

New WFTL History Page

WFTL will celebrate its 60th birthday next month -- even if it doesn't resemble the original, is on a new frequency, and transmits from way outside of Broward, south of South Bay, up near Lake Okeechobee.

I've just renovated and moved the WFTL page, created last year with info about WFTL people and formats, past and present. And lots of pictures.

There is also a LONG-TIME WFTL FAN shirt, mousepad, and other items, for people who enjoyed 100% local radio on WFTL 1400 in its heyday, from 1946 until just a few years ago.

And if that's not enough, it also includes a link to Mike Sheridan's (remember him?) WFTL tribute site.

RadioInsight.com's
Miami Board

(August 14, 2006) ... The Miami-Fort lauderdale-West Palm Beach Board of RadioInsight.com can now be viewed on the new main page of the South Florida Radio Pages.

Also on this page are links to all pages that have been moved and updated ... plus radio-related T-shirts and stuff.
