AUGUST 2006: SECTION 1 of 6 ⇒ RadioPages Shirts, Adam Bomb, Miami Dolphins, & Savage Nation

South Florida Radio Pages
Launch New Line of
Educational & Historic
Radio T-Shirts, Mousepads,
Mugs, Bags, and Other Items
For Radio Fans

(August 1, 2006) ... The South Florida Radio Pages has introduced a new line of T-shirts and related merorabilia, especially for south Florida radio fans and radio geeks everywhere.

So what if you didn't win a T-shirt from your favorite station? These are more interesting.

These shirts and related items were inspired by the talented Jim deYong and his RadioLogoLand Store, site, profiled in May Radio News. But they're entirely different.

Like I always tell people, I'm a writer, not an artist. So these are shirts you can READ, not just look at!

What Do Radio Station Call Letters Mean?
Have you ever wondered, what do radio station call letters mean?

Available on mugs, bags, and many varieties of shirts!

This What Do Radio Station Call Letters Mean? shirt reveals the secret behind call letters of 14 historic radio stations, with seven stations on the front and seven on the back: WGN, WBT, WIOD, WTIC, WLS, WOAI, WNYW, WGTO, WKBW, WSM, WCFL, WOWO, WSB, & WKWF. Mugs and some other items have a slightly different layout.

We've collected the stories behind 14 historic stations (including WKWF, WGTO, and WIOD in Florida) and presented them on a colorful shirt, available in a number of styles.

There are seven stations described on the front and seven on the back. For example, WSB in Atlanta stands for "Welcome South, Brother" and WLS in Chicago was owned by Sears, "World's Largest Store." WKBW in Buffalo was "Well-Known Bible Witness!"

Although I've known some of these acronyms for years, some of these stories took a bit of digging to find! No obvious ones like WABC, WCBS, and WNBC are included.

Amaze your friends with this fascinating shirt! Click the picture at right for shirts, mugs, mousepads, tote bags, and many more items with this educational design.

Obviously, these items have no relation to any station, past or present.

What is WTPS?
When WVCG 1080 in Coral Gables became WTPS The People's Station last winter, that was the end of a historic station that has played classical music and oldies, among other formats, over the years.

What Is WTPS?
Mousepad

But did you know that the acronym WTPS has several other meanings, not including water treatment plant system? The question, What is WTPS?, is on the back, with a dictionary-styled definition in front.

WTPS means a lot of different things around the world. You can look up three of them on this colorful dictionary-style shirt or mousepad. In British slang, for example, it's a slang acronym for What The Papers Say. Impress your friends with your intercontinental edu-macation! Click the picture for pictures and more info.

Of course, these items have no relation to any station, past or present, or anything the papers say. They're just for fun.

Long-Time WFTL 1400 Fan

Historic radio station WFTL (which stands for Ft Lauderdale) has been around Fort Lauderdale on 1400 kHz since 1946, when it was started on a houseboat.

That's a lot of memories, even for those of us fans who weren't even born yet in 1946!

Then, a few years ago, it was sold again and the format changed again. But this time the call letters of our historic Broward station were reassigned to the former WEAT in West Palm beach. WFTL now broadcasts from a powerful transmitter out near Lake Okeechobee -- while the old 1400 became a sports station and then a Caribbean station.

Long-Time WFTL Fan
Gray T-Shirt

So I created a collage of my few items old WFTL 1400 memorabilia that I've collected since the late 1960s... from Adult Music to Hot Talk... and created a very colorful design for a T-shirt or mousepad. Click the picture at right to see what items are available with this design.

Of course, these items obviously relate to the OLD, much-lamented and long-gone WFTL 1400, and have no relation to any current station.

See article below.

Y-100's Adam Bomb
Now Heard In Atlanta

(Atlanta, GA -- July 21, 2006) ... Adam Bomb has moved from Y-100 to an alphabetically nearby station: Q100.5 in atlanta.

Appetizerstogo.com

Frederick's of Hollywood, Inc.

Their web site says "ADAM BOMB IS HERE! Straight from South Beach to Atlanta... meet Adam Bomb. YOUR new night show on All The Hits Q100. Listen all week as celebs call the studio to welcome Adam to the ATL!"

Isn't it a riot how people think all of southeast Florida is South Beach? Wonder if the folks up there ever heard of Miramar, the location of Y-100. Or Fort Lauderdale, WHYI-FM's city of license!

Look Inside the Savage Nation

"Few things about Savage's pre-radio past could have presaged his rise as perhaps the far right's most vocal on-air ambassador. Not his adulation of [Alan] Ginsberg" says SF Weekly writer Ron Russell, writing about syndicated talker Michael Savage. "Not the fact that he once trolled the streets of Greenwich Village and, later, North Beach, in a beret. Or that the staunch anti-abortionist's first wife had two abortions during their marriage. And certainly not the fact that he was once Timothy Leary's gatekeeper at the LSD experimenter's farm."

SF Weekly is owned by the same company that owns Miami New Times and New Times Broward-Palm Beach, a total of 17 "alternative" papers, per their locator map. As you may guess, it's more a hatchet job than a fair-and-balanced report, but it'is interesting and informative neverthless. I knew he was a botanist, but didn't know he had been a beatnik, for example. At right is a caricature of Savage as a zookeeper, from the cover of ...

Read Russell's article at Inside the Savage Nation, if you dare. Enjoy it but take it with a grain of salt and consider the source.

AUGUST 2006: SECTION 2 of 6 → WIOD, Opie and Anthony, Dick Farrel, & WFTL Fans

Conservative W Palm Beach Talker
Dick Farrel Running For
Palm Beach County Commission

(West Palm Beach, FL -- July 22, 2006) ... Veteran WPBR talker Dick Farrel has declared his candidacy to fill the Palm Beach County Commission district 6 seat of chairman Tony Masilotti, who is stepping down from the board at the end of his term.

The South Florida Radio Pages need your support!

Please click the button above to donate via PayPal.
Thank you!

There are a total of ten candidates: four Democrats, five Republicans, and one Independent.

Farrel plans to give up his morning show on WPBR 1340 to run in the September 5 primary. Farrel is currently heard weekdays from 7 'til 9 AM on WPBR 1340.

WIOD Named Broward's
Official Emergency Station

(Fort Lauderdale, FL) ... Broward County has partnered with Clear Channel's WIOD 610, naming it as Broward’s official emergency radio station. During emergencies, WIOD will provide critical emergency announcements to Broward residents, such as declarations of emergency, flood watches, and other life-saving alerts.

WIOD will broadcast in-depth and timely coverage of emergency information throughout the designated emergency, including coverage of Broward County press conferences.

Emergency info will, of course, also be heard on many other stations, including the school board's WKPX at Piper High School.

Not to be left out, WFTL is now IDing as "Your Official Emergency Informtion Station," but is not stating who officially designated it as such.

For info about what stations will be carrying TV audio before, during, and after a storm, see Hurricane Info On South Florida Radio, now updated for Hurricane Season 2006.

Opie and Anthony on The Buzz

(West Palm Beach, FL -- July, 2006) ... Remember that pair of NYC deejays who stilled up a lot of controversy a few years ago by enticing a couple to do it in a church, on the air? They're here, on the air on the Florida peninsula!

Now you can hear Opie and Anthony mornings in the Palm Beaches, on WPBZ "The Buzz" 103.1.

Opie and anthony have a "best of" CD, Opie & Anthony's Demented World.

T-Shirt, Mousepad, and More
For Old-Time WFTL 1400 Fans

Collectible LONG TIME WFTL 1400 FAN Mouse Pad, Mini-Poster, and T-Shirt, picturing memoribilia going back to the 1960s... from Adult Music to Hot Talk

Remember the good ol' days of adult music on WFTL 1400? There were deejays Bob Roberts and John Lupton, and then there was Earl Nightingale's Our Changing World at 8 PM every night. (And if you called First Federal Savings the next day, they'd send you a free copy of the script.)

Then in 1988, controversial Sunrise ex-mayor John Lomelo got his own talk show on WFTL. I wrote about it for the now-defunct Miami News.
yellow

And I can't forget deejays Mike Sheridan and Bob Gordon, both of whom have contributed memories to South Florida Radio History.

Well, now I've gotten together some WFTL memorabilia from my collection (I never throw anything out), turned them into a collage, with LONG TIME WFTL FAN across the middle. Then I made up a T-shirt and a mousepad and a mini-poster with this design for us old codgers who remember the old WFTL when they played Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Perry Como.

If you click on the picture and go to the site you can click on another link to display a larger picture, easier to read.

These items don't relate to the new WFTL on 850 or the current owners, because I don't want to step on anyone's toes. (These shirts may even help them!) Maybe they'll design their own shirt, with Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Neal Boortz, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Savage, Laura Ingraham, Alan Colmes, and Joey Reynolds?

AUGUST 2006: SECTION 3 of 6 ⇒ Mickey Miller, Todd Schnitt, & Eddy Edwards

Dinner with Todd Schnitt: Priceless.

(Tampa, FL -- July 10, 2006) ... "Dinner with Todd Schnitt: Priceless." Or so it goes.

EBay recently sold dinner for two with Clear Channel afternoon drive personality Todd Schnitt, to benefit charity, for the cool sum of $8000. The ad for item #120002849898 said:

This is the chance of a lifetime to experience first hand the one-and-only Todd Schnitt/MJ. As a radio personality, Mr. Schnitt (MJ) is famed for his strikingly successful talk shows and is as well known for his personal integrity as his radio savvy. He is, quite simply, a legend, and he will sit down with you and up to one of your friends for dinner. Value: Priceless Donated by: Todd Schnitt (MJ).
The winning bidder chose to remain anonymous on eBay. But I expect we'll hear it mentioned on the show. The Schnitt Show originates from WFLA 970 in Tampa and is heard from 3 'til 6 weekdays on WIOD 610 in Miami.

Mickey Miller Leaves WJNA For Career In Farming

Mickey Miller has left the building. Uh... he has left WJNA 640 to go back to farming.

You can visit Mickey at Mickey Miller's Playbarn and Maize Maze, his family farm/amusement park, next time you're in Shropshire, England. There's even a "Maize Maze" -- a maze through the cornfields. Click on his picture for more info.

Just kidding. Not the same Mickey. Our own Mickey Miller of WJNA got a job in Madison, Wisconsin. But since Mickey was known for his strange humor and stranger character voices, we thought this would be a fitting sendoff. But there is a resemblance!

Don't worry. Mickey Miller may be gone but the other Mickey and his friends can still be heard on Radio Disney every day, WMNE 1600 and WMYM 990. So we may someday forget that, for a while, Mickey (Miller) and Donald (Agony) were on the same WJNA morning show.

Eddy Edwards' Caribbean Riddims Still
Entertaining After 23 Years --
Now on WTPS

(Coral Gables, FL -- July 10, 2006) ... WTPS 1080 (the former WVCG) still has some local programming, in addition to its syndicated talk which started earlier this year.

One of the best is Caribbean Riddims, a Saturday afternoon show hosted by Eddy Edwards since the WVCG days.... 23 years! In addition to the Caribbean rhythms, there are a lot of features crammed into the 3-to-6 PM show:

  • At 4:05, attorney Marlon Hill presents D'People's Politics, specializing in immigration issues.

    What is WTPS? Mousepad

    T-Shirts and other
    What is WTPS? Stuff

  • At 4:30, Ken English's Liquid Lounge is "a look at the waterside of South Florida and the Caribbean, both above and below the surface," with emphasis on the environmental. Liquid Lounge was English's program on WAXY until it changed format a few years ago.
  • At 5 PM is the 20-minute RetroRevolution segment of classic Caribbean music, which Edwards calls "a mix of music you won't hear on any other station in the world. Sometimes I mix it in advance. Other days, I let the spirit move me."

Recently, Eddy was profiled in HardBeatNews, a Caribbean news service. Read the story: Focus On Caribbean-American Radio Personalities: WTPS’ Eddy Edwards.

Miami Sound Analyzed

(Miami, FL -- June 2006) ... Have you ever wondered exactly what the much-vaunted Miami Sound actually is? For those who care about this, Michael Hamersly answered the question in depth recently, in his fascinating Miami Herald article, Trying to Nail Miami Sound. And I always thought the Miami Sound was what came out of the Miami Sound Machine (MSM)!

WJNA Fiddling With
Format Again?

In a few short years since they moved from 1040, they've gone from "unforgettable" to the short-lived "adult hits" to today's still schizophrenic format.

Most of the day they have what could best be described as the "Jack" format for an older audience. But then there's the All-Request Oldies Show, which is followed by their biggest secret, Paul Dunn and his indescribable overnight show, which seems to be a mixture of the old beautiful music format, big band, and jazz. Check it out!

The latest wrinkle is the addition of two well-known TV celebrities who have "Music of Your Life" style playlists: Peter Marshall from 10 AM 'til noon, followed by Wink Martindale from noon 'til 3 PM. Joyce Kaufman has moved to the morning show slot since Mickey Miller has left.

Twice The Chill on Love94

(Miramar, FL) ... WLVE-FM 93.9 has doubled its Saturday night chill. From 10 PM 'til midnight Saturdays there's the local Love 94 Chill Room, as before.

But now it's followed by a syndicated chill show featuring jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, from midnight 'til 2.

Chill with Chris Botti has been on the air for about a year and a half, mentioned on this weekend's show.

Botti's most recent CD was the October 2005 release of To Love Again. Botti's tour is scheduled to stop at Sound Advice in West Palm Beach in September.

WEDR & Liberty City
Rally Against Crime

(Liberty City, FL -- July 23, 2006) ... WEDR'a The Big Lip Bandit, Supa Cindy and Benji Brown presented their July 12 morning show live from NW 62 St @ I-95, to draw attention to the wave of shootings in the area.

Elected officials, thousands of residents, and station Vice President/General Manager Jerry Rushin participated on the scene, during the 6-to-10-AM show.

For more info, read the Miami Herald article, Leaders Rally For Peace.

Josh's Radio Blog

INTERVIEW

Although it's just a year old, the Michigan-based The Radio Blog of former Miamian Josh C. has attracted readers from all over.

"But why?" I asked Josh.

"I'm sure many people interested in South Florida radio would wonder why they should be interested in a blog mostly relating to Mid-Michigan radio" says Josh. "I'd give them three reasons. First, radio is radio no matter where you are. The same principles apply, and while each station has to tailor what they do to their local audience, they still have to play by the same rules of the game."

"Second, I don't just write about Mid-Michigan radio. I also write about South Florida (Miami is my hometown, after all) and a few other areas of the country I'm interested in. In fact, the most traffic I've had yet came with the announcement of John 'Footy' Kross' retirement from WHYI (Footy Leaves Y-100). Scores of people searching both Google and Yahoo! were wondering if he'd been fired as Kenny Walker had been not long prior and if Footy was going to resurface somewhere else on the dial."

"But third, aside from local topics, I also write about the news, technology, legislation and content involved in radio (or, on occasion, that radio is involved in). Those posts are the ones I consider to be the most important because they don't just involve one station, market or format. Those are the topics that are relevent to us all, whether we're in the industry or we just enjoy what the industry offers us. I've seen my readership grow from one person in a neighboring town to anywhere between 20 and 70 hits a day from all around the world."

Josh's The Radio Blog is definitely an interesting blog to check on from time to time. (And now that it's linked here, I'll remember to look more often, too.)
